Me: Did you have any siblings when you were young? Charlemagne: Yes I did, his name was Carloman; my father was named Pepin the Short and my mother was named Bertrada. Me: How did you come into the throne? Charlemagne: When my father died in 768, my brother and I controlled the throne together in a joint rule. Me: How did you eventually become sole ruler? Charlemagne: My brother unexpectedly died in 771 and I took over. Me: Exactly how much land did you control? Charlemagne: I ruled all of the Western Christian provinces except the British Isles. Me: Were you more than an emperor? Charlemagne: As a matter of fact, yes I was; I was crowned Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day in 800. Me: How did you pass on the power in your last years? Charlemagne: I divided the power into my three sons: Charles, Pepin, and Louis. But Charles died soon after and so did Pepin, thus making Louis the sole ruler.
